RESIDENTIAL

2023

The Hawaii Residential Code is the set of rules that govern the construction of one- and two-family dwellings in the state of Hawaii. The code is based on the International Residential Code (IRC).

Here are some examples of the requirements in the Hawaii Residential Code:

  • Emergency escape and rescue openings

All emergency escape and rescue openings must have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet.

  • Exposure category

The exposure category for a given location is determined using Figures R301.2(9)(a) through R301.2(9)(e) in the code.

  • Existing structures

Structures built in accordance with previous building code requirements can continue to be used and occupied as long as they are not a hazard to the public or occupants.

Other building codes in Hawaii include: State Building Code, State Energy Code, State Fire Code, State Plumbing Code, and State Electrical Code.
